Because green tea is good for your skin, it is a popular ingredient in many quality bath soaps.
There are two types of green tea soap. It may contain synthetic fragrance that smells like green tea, or it may contain real green tea. It is important to be able to distinguish between the two.
Fragrance or Real?
Fragrance is made from synthetic chemicals. It does not contain the powerful antioxidants that make green tea so beneficial to skin. To make things worse, according to the Environmental Working Group, the term “fragrance” often hides a witch’s brew of unwholesome chemicals like phalates.
When selecting green tea soap, you’ll have better luck if you learn how to read the label. For further information, read Green Tea Cream - 5 Things To Watch Out For In Label .
What Skin Type?
Soaps are available for a variety of different skin types.
To clean sensitive skin without causing irritation, look for a gentle glycerin or goat’s milk soap.
If you have dry skin, look for “superfatted” soaps with extra oils to moisturize. You can also find textured soaps with oats or chopped up herbs inside to exfoliate and clean your skin at the same time.
Everyday or Gift?
In addition to the above guidelines, you should also consider what you will be using your soap for.
Will it be used as an everyday bath soap, or is it a gift for someone special? Will it hide in your bathtub or be displayed on a soap dish to your guests?
These questions will help you determine what to look for your green tea soap.
Which Everyday Soap?
Plain, everyday green tea soap can be found in drugstores, grocery stores or through online retailers like Amazon.com.
The Kiss My Face Bar contains real green tea, but it also has fragrance oil, which causes SkinDeep to rate it as a “moderate hazard.”
This glycerin bath bar by Earth Therapeutics is full of real green tea and other natural ingredients. It would make an excellent choice for your day-to-day bathing needs.
Even better, the Environmental Working Group’s SkinDeep database ranks this soap as a “low hazard.”
Handmade Soap
To get something a little more out of the ordinary, look for a high quality handmade soap.
The craft of soap making is ancient, going back thousands of years. A complete soap making factory was even found in the ruins of Pompeii! Many people still practice the art of making soap by hand. You can find handmade artisan soaps at craft fairs, or online at Ebay and Etsy.com.
Each bar of handmade soap is unique, and the extra care and effort makes them stand out from the crowd.
They make perfect guest soaps for your bathroom soap dish. You can find incredible works of art, or small soaps in interesting shapes that will give your bathroom some character!
Which Handmade Soap?
Even with handmade soaps, you should be sure to check the ingredients. Ideally, you want soaps that contain real green tea with no fragrance oils.
Some soap makers use real green tea or green tea extract, some use green tea fragrance oil, and some use a mixture of both. If you aren’t sure what’s in it, ask before you buy.
The Body Perfumery handmade soap has no green tea at all - just fragrance. That doesn’t mean it’s harmful, but it could be. Also, it won’t have the antioxidants that a bar containing real green tea would.
The ShastaEsScents bar soap contains all natural ingredients, and is scented with real green tea and other essential oils.
Now that you know what to look for, go exploring! You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to treat your skin to the benefits of green tea every time you take a shower!
