Arcona Studios is an organic salon and skin care company based in Los Angeles, California. The company motto, “Color, fragrance and consistency don’t change your skin, but live, active ingredients do,” illustrates their commitment to using natural ingredients to get results for their clients.
One of the "live, active ingredients" that shows up in several of their products is green tea. Will their green tea skin care products benefit your skin, or are you better off spending your money elsewhere?
So What?
Many cosmetics claim to harness the benefits of green tea, but then only include trace amounts of active ingredients and sometimes have other harmful ingredients as well. Arcona claims to create only pure, healthy skin care products that will make a noticeable difference in your complexion in as little as a week. According to the company, your skin should improve even more with time.
What They Haven't Told You
Arcona's products do contain natural ingredients. However, in some products where tea is claimed as an active ingredient, it appears near the bottom of the list. Therefore, some of their active ingredients may be present in concentrations that are too low to provide any real benefit.
Chemical Composition
There are 8 green tea skin care products on Arcona's website - 2 hair care products and 6 skin care products. Of course, the exact chemical composition of each product varies.
However, all of Arcona's products are just as notable for what is not in them as they are for their ingredients. The company website states that none of the products use "petrochemicals, binders or fillers, chemical stabilizers, parabens, sodium lauryl sulfates, perfumes, dyes, or any other caustic, toxic ingredients." This is certainly a refreshing change from the cosmetic industry status quo.
Advantages
Arcona's green tea skin care products are unlikely to harm you no matter how long you use them. They don’t contain any of the chemicals listed above, and the brand does not show up as potentially hazardous in the Skin Deep Database. In fact, their sunscreens are rated as a 2 out of 10, which is an excellent score.
The ingredients are natural and primarily derived from plants.
In several products, green tea is listed near the top.
Synergistic natural ingredients work together to enhance each other’s effectiveness.
Disadvantages
For skin care, Arcona is expensive. 4 ounces of lotion is $18.00!
Some ingredients that are claimed as active ingredients are listed near the bottom of the ingredient list.
There is no way to evaluate the concentration of catechins or EGCG, green tea's most powerful and effective antioxidants.
Recommendations
It is wonderful to see a skin care company call itself natural and mean it!
Moisturizing Lotion
If you are interested in using Arcona's green tea skin care products, try their green tea moisturizing lotion. This lotion has green tea extract listed at number 3 on the ingredient list, almost at the top. Carrier oils include macadamia, borage and sesame seed oil, all of which provide skin with the moisture it needs without feeling heavy. The green tea in this product joins forces with the antioxidants found in yerba mate extract to beat back free radicals.
Booster Serum
Green tea is also listed as an active ingredient in their Booster Serum - but at position number 7 on the ingredient list, it is debatable how much of the product's benefit derives from green tea. Most of the antioxidant action seems to come from resveratrol extracted from grape skin, with green tea extract perhaps providing a small boost.
White Tea Purifying Cleanser
The white tea extract in the White Tea Purifying Cleanser is also listed seventh on the ingredient list. However, there may be enough tea in the product to calm skin and reduce redness like Arcona claims it will, especially given that the product does contain a lot of soothing aloe vera. Whether or not white tea would be truly effective against free radicals depends on the amount of EGCG and other green tea antioxidants that the product contains. Since this is not listed on the label, it is impossible to verify.
Toner Tea Bar
The Toner Tea Bar has both black and green tea, and claims to fight free radicals. Black and green tea in a cleanser might help soothe irritation, but tea extracts would be more effective at fighting free radicals and preventing sun damage in a lotion, instead of a cleanser that you quickly was off.
Raspberry Resurfacing Peel
The Raspberry Resurfacing Peel claims to use green tea to "heal, soothe and protect," but it shows up last in the ingredient list. That's not to say that the peel doesn't work - just that it doesn't work because of the green tea.
The verdict? If you can afford to try Arcona’s products, they are probably worth it. However, if you are looking to harness the power of green tea, make sure you use products that contain significant amounts of it.
