In the green tea skin benefits article, I’ve discussed how wonderful green tea is for your skin. For example, it is a powerful antioxidant, it soothes inflammation, and it can stop acne it in its tracks.

Body lotion is a great way for your skin to absorb all the goodness of green tea as part of your normal moisturizing routine. The skin care aisle is full of lotions and potions labeled “green tea”, but you may be surprised to learn that not all green tea products are beneficial.

To buy a green tea skin lotion that delivers, you will need to get your reading glasses out and scrutinize the label. You are looking for three things:

• The amount of green tea the product actually contains.

• The presence of carrier oil that will bring the green tea into your skin.

• The absence of not-so-nice ingredients that have the potential to harm your skin instead of helping it.

Let’s use these guidelines to evaluate the top sellers on Amazon.com, shall we? Here's what I think are the best green tea body lotion products online:

This product sounded skin-friendly enough, and the top ingredient is organic green tea in purified water.

Unfortunately, the ingredient list gets less pure the more you read it… Skin Deep gives this lotion 6 out of 10 on the hazard scale, largely due to synthetic fragrance and triethanolamine, a ph adjuster, surfactant and emulsifier.

Thanks, but no thanks….

We wish green tea were a little bit higher on the ingredients list for this product. Although this body butter has real green tea and not just fragrance, green tea is in the middle at the number 8 position.

Grapeseed oil and shea nut butter are the carriers here.

Combined with the green tea and aloe vera, this body butter should feel wonderful on dry or irritated skin.

This product had some ingredients, like phenoxyethanol, that raised a little bit of concern on the Skin Deep database. The product itself is rated as a 4, which means it is a moderate concern.

This lotion for hands and body lists green tea as the second ingredient.

It uses nourishing sesame seed oil, kukui oil, macadamia nut oil, borage oil and corn oil as carriers. Aloe vera extract helps increase the soothing power of this all-natural moisturizing cream.

Arcona’s products have not yet been reviewed by Skin Deep, but there were no parabens, random fragrances or any ingredients that would raise red flags.

The downside? At $18 on drugstore.com, price may be an issue.

This all natural hand and body lotion scores a “1” on the Skin Deep website, meaning it is a very low hazard (pure water is rated a 0).

Carrier oils include rosehip oil, evening primrose oil and white camellia oil, which comes from the green tea plant.

This lotion uses matcha green tea, but it is listed at the bottom of the ingredients list. We wish it had more tea but appreciate the lack of icky chemicals.
