Sperm is highly susceptible to free radicals, highly reactive toxins that damage cells and DNA.
What is free radicals?
Free radicals are everywhere - in the air we breathe, the food we eat and even the sunlight. Every moment, the body absorbs oxygen and turns it into energy in a process called oxidation. This process also releases free radicals.
Free radicals are usually mopped up by antioxidants before they can hurt us. As we age, however, this process becomes more inefficient.
Green tea is a rich source of catechin, a highly potent antioxidant. It has been found to be over 100 times more effective in neutralizing free radicals than vitamin C and 25 times more powerful than vitamin E.
No wonder many herbal blends promoting fertility are including green tea as their common ingredient.
Boston University Study
A 2006 study about green tea and erection conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine investigated whether long term consumption of antioxidant-rich foods alleviate erectile dysfunction.
Rabbits suffering from erection problems drank antioxidant beverages such as pomegranate juice, red wine, blueberry juice, cranberry juice, orange juice and green tea.
The scientists found that long term consumption of antioxidant-rich foods reduces erectile dysfunction.
Pomegranate juice, especially, demonstrates the highest antioxidant activities. It was found to increase blood flow, improve erectile response and smooth muscle relaxation.
According to Chinese herbal medicine, drinking green tea with Panax ginseng boosts men's fertility.
Commonly known as the Chinese or Korean ginseng, Panax ginseng is usually grown in Northern China and Korea. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, Panax ginseng promotes Yang energy and stimulates the body.
Red Panax ginseng is especially potent. Grown for more than 6 years, it is red because it is steamed before being dried.
Korean Study
A 2002 Korean study involving 45 patients found that consuming 900 milligrams of Korean red ginseng 3 times a day improves erection after 8 weeks.
The following herbal remedy has been recommended for centuries:
Boil 15 grams of ginseng for 30 minutes. Use the ginseng liquor to brew 5 grams of green tea. If the flavor is too intense, dilute by adding more water. Consume once a day.
