Green Tea Antioxidants - Why They Are So Powerful
Green Tea Benefits #2:
Lose weight and burn fat.
"Drinking tea for a long time makes one thin," says ancient Chinese medicinal classic Bencao Shiyi. Fast forward 1,300 years, and that is exactly what scientists have found today.
For those of you who are skeptical, I highly recommend you read Swen Wolfram's excellent review paper Anti-obesity effects of green tea.
In his peer review of 74 studies, he concluded that weight loss due to green tea consumption has been demonstrated in laboratory studies involving cell culture and animals. According to Dr. Wolfram, 9 human studies have been conducted, with "most of these studies reporting decreased body weight and fat mass."
Green tea weight loss works because it does not require you to eat a very low calorie diet. There are at least 5 proven ways they can help you lose weight:
Increase metabolism
Burn fat
Block conversion of energy into fat.
Help your body absorb less dietary fat.

Green Tea Benefits #3:
Prolong
life
The Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort Study is one of the largest population study ever conducted - 40,530 Japanese adults were questionaired for 11 years.
Those who drink 5 or more cups of green tea a day are 16% less likely to die from any cause than those who drink less than one cup a day. They are also 26% less likely to die from heart disease.
"The most important finding is that green tea may prolong people's lives through reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease”, said Dr Shinichi Kuriyama, who led the research.

Green Tea Benefits #4:
Prevent and
treat cancers
Green tea anti-cancer prowess extends beyond its antioxidant activities.
It starves off cancer cells by restricting blood vessel growth. It wreaks havoc in abnormal cells, causing them to self-destruct. It blocks over-production of harmful enzymes that act as catalysts to cancer growth.
And yet it has few if any side effects. Unlike drugs such as Vioxx and Celebrex, studies suggest that green tea active compound EGCG destroys cancer cells without harming surrounding healthy cells.
From brain tumors to leukemia, from lung cancer, stomach cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer to bladder cancer, not to mention breast cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer, green tea cancer studies are showing positive results.
Green Tea Cancer Benefit - Unproven And Yet Valuable?
Green Tea Benefits #5:
Improve Concentration and Calmness
While the Chinese have been drinking green tea for more than 2,000 years, l-theanine was only identified as a separate constituent in 1949.
The honor goes to the Japanese, who discovered that it makes up about 50% of the free amino acids present in tea.
Due to its small size, scientists found that it crosses into your brain easily, resulting in many subtle health benefits.
Numerous human trials have shown that theanine can promote alpha brain waves, putting you in a relaxed, yet alert state without causing drowsiness.
Dopamine is a hormone that is associated with a feeling of well-being. It is a neurotransmitter that is released during pleasurable activities such as eating and sex.
Some studies also suggest that theanine may increase your brain’s production of serotonin and GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). However, these results are still highly preliminary.
Theanine enhances the ability to learn, and to remember. It increases concentration, a reason why monks and scholars incorporate tea drinking into meditation and study.
You can read about the scientific studies in the article below:

Green Tea Benefits #6:
Improve Mental Well Being
A 2009 study conducted by Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine showed that drinking green tea may help with stress. The scientists found that drinking green tea may reduce psychological stress by as much as 20%.
In another study of 42,093 Japanese individuals, 6.6% suffered from psychological stress. In those individuals suffering from stress, green tea consumption improved psychological well-being.
Another smaller study found that green tea drinkers were 44% less likely to suffer from depression symptoms.
Two 2007 breakthrough studies found that green tea regenerates damaged brain cells and is a viable treatment option for
A 2016 study by Centre for Genomic Regulation in Spain found that green tea improves the cognitive abilities of people suffering from Down Syndrome, a condition previously thought to be genetic related and untreatable.
Another 2017 study performed by Northwest A&F University in China found that green tea protects against memory loss. Junk food is considered high in saturated fat and sugar. Mice that consumed both junk food and green tea were protected against weight gain, diabetes and memory impairment.
In the same year, another Canadian study found that EGCG inhibits the formation of harmful brain plaques that are a hallmark of Alzheimer, as they can disrupt formation between brain cells.
A 2019 study conducted by Kyung Hee University found that EGCG may alleviate the harmful effects of post-traumatic stress disorder.
Another study performed by the National University of Singapore found that individuals who drank tea four times a week for about 25 years had more efficient brain function.
“Our results offer the first evidence of positive contribution of tea drinking to brain structure, and suggest that drinking tea regularly has a protective effect against age-related decline in brain organisation” said Feng Lei, team leader and assistant professor in the Department of Psychological Medicine at the NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
Green Tea Benefits #7:
Rejuvenate
body, protect it from heart attacks and strokes
A 2005 study conducted by the Institute of Child Health in the United Kingdom found that drinking green tea after a stroke may speed up the recovery process.
EGCG also speeds up the recovery of heart cells and alleviates organ damage. It works by blocking the action of a protein called Stat 1, which plays a part in inducing cell death.
"We're extremely encouraged by these findings and hope to implement them in the clinical setting to minimize cell death activation levels in patients with acute coronary artery disease," said molecular biologist Dr. Anastasis Stephanou, who led the research.
Tea and Stroke - Pathways To Recovery
In addition, five population studies suggest that tea drinking reduces heart disease risk, with one study discovering that men who drank 10 cups (about 32 ounces) of green tea a day had 58% lower risk of dying from heart attack compared to those who drank 3 cups or less.
Green Tea Benefits #8:
Improve Heart Health
As we grow older, our arteries naturally harden.
Fats, cholesterol and blood platelets accumulate in the artery wall. When they thicken and clog up the entire artery, a heart attack or stroke occurs.
A hamsters study suggests green tea inhibits atherosclerosis, the hardening and thickening of arteries. A human equivalent dose of 3 to 4 cups a day is associated with 26% to 46% lower risk.
Green tea also helps to keep the artery passageway clear by reducing cholesterol, triglycerides and blood clots.
Scientific studies have increasingly shown that there are at least six different ways it may improve your heart health:
Expand your heart artery and improve blood flow
Reduce heart attack incidence
Reverse organ damage from heart attack and stroke
Keep your arteries passageway clear by reducing cholesterols, triglycerides and blood clots.
Reduce inflammation
Improve elasticity by regenerating elastin, an essential protein that gives the artery its stretchy, yet study, texture
Green Tea and Heart Health - Cardiovascular Benefits
Green Tea Benefits #9:
Reduce high
blood pressure
A 2004 study by Yang found that drinking green and oolong tea for at least a year reduces high blood pressure.
Regular drinkers are 46% less likely to develop high blood pressure if they drink one-half to two-half cups a day. They are 65% less likely to develop high blood pressure if they drink more than 2 cups a day.
Green Tea Benefits #10:
Prevent and
treat diabetes
Green tea is anti-diabetic. Tea compounds EGCG and theaflavins have been found to regulate blood sugar levels in the following ways:
Increases insulin activities
Promotes glucose metabolism
Blocks glucose absorption.
Richard Anderson of BHNRC found that brewed tea, when added to the fat cells of laboratory rats, raises insulin activity by more than 15 times. This higher insulin activity was found with green, oolong and black tea, regardless of whether caffeinated or decaffeinated.
Tea and Insulin Sensitivity - 15 Times More Effective
A study discovered that drinking 6 cups of tea per day for 8 weeks reduces blood sugar levels by 15% to 20%. Furthermore, drinking green tea combined with eating a Japanese diet is highly effective in preventing diabetes.
Tea and Blood Sugar - Reduce Cravings and Hunger
Green Tea Benefits #11:
Treat Inflammation
You will be surprised to learn that green tea's anti-inflammatory property makes it a perfect remedy for a variety of conditions.
If you are a woman, take note. Rheumatoid arthritis is a common disease affecting about 1 in 100 people. Women are 3 times more likely to be affected. There is no known cure.
Two studies found that drinking tea may prevent rheumatoid inflammation.
In one study, mice were injected with collagen to induce a condition similar to rheumatoid arthritis in humans. Of those who drank tea, 44% became arthritic. Of those who didn’t drink tea, 94% became arthritic.
Plagued by acne or pimples? Preliminary data suggests that green tea cream causes fewer side effects than benzoyl peroxide. Patients treated by green tea reported fewer cases of dry skin, itching and allergic responses.

Green Tea Benefits #12:
Promote gut bacteria. Reduce food allergy
The consumption of green tea may help suppress the immune response which causes allergies, according to a new Japanese study in mice.>
According to this study, gut bacteria Flavonifractor Plautii (FP) has many health benefits:
Reduce inflammation
Reduce food allergy
Reduce food allergy.
The study found that consuming green tea increases the abundance of FP.

Green Tea Benefits #13:
Protect lung from
smoking
Irritated by second hand smoke? Why should we be forced to breathe in carcinogens just because other people are smoking?
Green tea protects you from lung cancer by reducing cellular damage caused by cigarette smoke. A study conducted by the University of Arizona found that it reduces cellular damage by 25%.
Professor Wong Jui-hung, who supervised Lin's research said:
"This study has shown that drinking green tea can check the growth of insulin-like growth factor, which is a hormone that stimulates the growth of cancerous cells."
"Lung cancer is common in Taiwan but rare in Japan because the Japanese like to drink green tea."
Green Tea and Smoking - Reduce Lung Cancer Risk
Green Tea Benefits #14:
Protect liver from alcohol
I feel sorry writing this, but in a laboratory study, rats were intoxicated with alcohol for 4 weeks. It was found that green tea prevented damage to their livers.
If that wasn't nasty enough, in another laboratory study, mice were exposed to carbon tetrachloride, a toxic chemical solvent. Green tea so greatly reduced their liver injuries that researchers suggested it should be used to treat liver disease.
Green Tea and Liver - Hangover Remedy?
Green Tea Benefits #15:
Prevent tooth decay. Cure bad breath.
Have a sweet tooth and can't seem to brush your teeth often enough? Tea can help. Unlike soft drinks, it is alkaline and non-erosive.
Green tea is a good source of fluoride. One cup of brewed green tea contains around 0.3 to 0.5 mg of fluoride, an optimal level of fluoride according to dentists.
Fluoride builds in our teeth enamel, making it more resistant against acids.
Tea compounds have also been found to destroy bacteria and viruses that cause throat infections, dental caries and other dental conditions. Tea extracts are used to make toothpaste and mouthwash.
A 2003 study conducted by US microbiologist, Milton Schiffenbauer, of Pace University found that caffeinated green tea is better than caffeinated black tea at fighting viruses.
"If we can stimulate the immune system and at the same time we are destroying the organisms, then it makes sense to drink more tea."

Green Tea Benefits #16:
Build bone
Studies have found that regular tea consumption preserved bone density possibly due to its high fluoride, flavonoids and phytoestrogen content.
A Taiwanese study found that it is not the amount of tea a person drinks, but the long-term consumption of tea that makes the difference.
These are what the researchers found:
Benefits were most noticeable in people who drink at least 2 cups of green, oolong or black tea a day, for at least 6 years.
People who drink tea regularly for over 10 years have the highest overall bone mineral densities – 6.2% higher than non regular tea drinkers.
Regular tea drinkers for 6 to 10 years have bone mineral densities that are 2.3% higher than non regular tea drinkers.
Green Tea and Bone Growth - Reduce Osteoporosis Risk
Green Tea Benefits #17:
Boost immunity. Protect against Coronavirus.
Do you know that you can consume an epigenetics diet that will bolster your body' immunity against Coronavirus or Covid 19?
According to epigenetic research, superfood such as red onions, juniper berries and green tea can modify how gene functions and help the body fights off coronavirus. Further, it just takes one gram of green tea leaves to make a difference!"
Green Tea, Epigenetics and Coronavirus
Tea also fights flu and cold. It contains antigens that prepare us for bacterial invasion. A study on black tea drinkers found that 5 small cups of black tea a day increases immunity.
Tea contains chemicals known as alkylamine antigens, which are found in some bacteria, tumor cells, parasites and fungi. Drinking tea helps our body build up defense against them.
Green Tea Benefits #18:
Rehydrate
Public health nutritionist Dr. Carrie Ruxton and her colleagues at Kings College London said tea is healthier than pure water.
"Drinking tea is actually better for you than drinking water. Water is essentially replacing fluid. Tea replaces fluids and contains antioxidants so it's got two things going for it", said Dr. Ruxton
They dispelled the common belief that tea dehydrates. Tea not only rehydrates as well as water does, it also has many other health benefits.

Green Tea Benefits #19:
Improve Sex Life
The jury is still out on this one, but there is some evidence that tea might be able to help.
A 2006 study about green tea and erection conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine investigated whether long term consumption of antioxidant-rich foods alleviate erectile dysfunction.
Rabbits suffering from erection problems drank antioxidant beverages such as pomegranate juice, red wine, blueberry juice, cranberry juice, orange juice and green tea.
The scientists found that long term consumption of antioxidant-rich foods reduces erectile dysfunction.
